The US technology giant launched the flagship iPhone 14 at an event earlier this month. It focused on safety upgrades rather than flashy new technical specifications, with the exception of a new adventure-focused watch.

“The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” the company said.

The US technology giant’s main iPhone assembler Foxconn is manufacturing the devices at its Sriperumbudur factory on the outskirts of Chennai. iPhone units made in India will go on sale in the country later this year. “We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” an Apple spokesperson said.

The US company started manufacturing smartphones in India in 2017, but until this year, the iPhone maker has used the manufacturing facilities in India to assemble older generation handsets.

The locally-made iPhone 14 will not only be sold in the local market of India, but the company will export it to other countries. The locally-manufactured iPhone 14 will be available in the Indian market shortly. India is the second-largest smartphone market in the world. The possible reason for starting production in India is that the US technology giant wants to boost customers in the country, which, despite being one of the world’s largest economies, is currently a small market for it. Additionally, Apple wants to diversify production away from China.
