Terming it “expansion of authoritarianism”, Taiwan has said that relationship between Russia and China is a threat to global peace.
Taipei called for the international community to resist the ties between Moscow and Beijing.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen said on Friday China and Russia are “disrupting and threatening the world order” with Beijing’s recent large-scale military exercises near the island and Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
She said this during a meeting in Taipei with US Senator Marsha Blackburn, who is on the second visit by members of Congress since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip earlier this month. Ms Pelosi’s visit prompted China to launch military exercises in which it fired numerous missiles and sent dozens of warplanes and naval ships to virtually surround the island.
According to reports, some Chinese ships crossed the center line in the Taiwan Strait that has long been a buffer between the sides.
Beijing claims Taiwan as its own region, to be brought under its control by force if necessary. China has also boosted its relations with Russia and is seen as silently supporting Moscow’s attack on Ukraine.
Authoritarian regimes
In a statement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry said Taipei “severely condemns Russia for following the Chinese Communist Party’s authoritarian expansionist government to continue to make false statements at international venues that demean our country’s sovereignty”. “(Russia) calls those who maintain peace and the status quo provocative, which highly demonstrates the harm caused by the alliance of Chinese and Russian authoritarian regimes on international peace, stability, democracy and freedom,” the statement added.
